Captain Jacob Meryl has lusted after Maltinian Ambassador Arlite Parvone since he first laid eyes on her, but the timing has never been right. At least, not until now. A late night call for help from Arlite sends Jacob on a mission to investigate a potential slave vessel—and to win Arlite's heart.

"You are a riddle to me," Arlite told him. She ran her hand through his hair and scratched lightly at his scalp. "So valiant, so brave, yet so unwilling to take credit for either, or achieve greatness. You would be a force to be reckoned with, if you ever decided to stand for something."
"I stand for a lot of things." Jacob leaned back, feeling more than a little insulted. "The fact that I haven't died for any of them doesn't lessen my passion for them. 'The mark of the immature man is that he wants to die nobly for a cause, while the mark of a mature man is that he wants to live humbly for one'," he quoted.
"Is that from a book?"
"No. Wilhelm Stekel said it. He was a doctor in ancient Earth history."
Arlite smiled. "He must've been very smart."
"Indeed. But did you ask me to share your bed in order to speak on wars and philosophy?"
"I must admit, I had other things in mind."
"That's a relief." Jacob slid his hands around her waist, felt her tremble in his grasp. He trailed his lips down her jaw to her neck, nuzzled her earlobe.
Arlite sighed and reached out to him, her fingers digging into his forearms. "I've never . . . ."
He straightened then, locked his gaze with hers. "Never?"
She shook her head. "No."
"How in the universe has a woman as beautiful as you managed to remain untouched?"
Arlite blushed. "There are many more women far prettier than me."
Jacob took one of her hands, guided it to his crotch. "Then whom must this be for?"
Arlite gasped, her fingers tightening. "Me?"
